On the occasion of Milan Photo Week, mc2gallery is pleased to present the Finnish artist’s personal exhibition at the spaces of the Milan Aquarium.
Susanna Majuri is internationally known thanks to numerous personal exhibitions in important museums such as the Finnish Photography Museum, the Charleroi Photography Museum and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen.
For the past 14 years Susanna has worked with water using it as if it were painting. Susanna Majuri’s are images that refer to the fairy tales of the north representing her world and her culture completely immersed (literally) in what are the natural elements of her land: light and water.
The subjects and the surrounding environment seem to merge into one as if they wanted to deceive the perception of the observer. Slender bodies are represented within fantastic landscapes submerged by water, the predominant element of her work, her inspiring muse. Her shots are basically magical as if we were inside a dream, where everything is represented with a marked refinement that distinguishes all his art. Susanna Majuri shows us through the elements and the colors her mother country, her land as a dreamlike landscape, in which these figures of immersed women live worlds poised between the dream and the nightmare.
We could call them “human aquariums of feelings”, in front of which we find ourselves as helpless spectators.
Women who seem imprisoned in worlds from which it is impossible to escape. The liquid effect enhances the sense of memory or window on distant or parallel worlds, so far yet so close that they can be touched, if only we had the courage to reach out to break that thin transparent wall that seems to be able to swallow us.
In 2016 Susanna Majuri presented her first book “Sense of Water” which collects images from the beginning of her career up to the most recent works, accompanied by the writings of three Norwegian authors Vigdís Grímsdóttir, Monica Fagerholm, Tua Forsström who were inspired by the photographs of the artist. A book that takes the viewer on a visual and emotional journey through deeply intimate and personal scenes and representations, whose themes face the most hidden fears of the human soul.
