Mareografia

Presented Artist:

Ilaria Abbiento

Ilaria Abbiento’s MAREOGRAFIA artistic project, curated by Claudio Composti, on display from
30 September to 30 October 2022 at the Civic Aquarium of Milan, is promoted by the Municipality of Milano Cultura and by the Aquarium – Civic Hydrobiological Station.

The itinerary offers a series of works including photographic prints, installations and videos by the Neapolitan artist, already presented in galleries and museums in Italy and abroad, which date back to the last years of her production.
Few elements have as many symbolic values as water has. In mythology and in all religions or philosophies she is always cited as a sacred element that binds cultures that are also very distant from each other. From Christianity to Buddhism, from Hinduism to Islam, water is a powerful symbol, which takes on meanings of passage of existence. Symbol of life, rebirth and purification. It embodies the feminine principle of fertility. It is seen as an element of mysterious strength, capable of continually transforming itself.
In the art of Ilaria Abbiento, viscerally in love with the sea, these meanings are found declined in the different expressions of her creativity. In fact, some recent videos and photographs will be shown which will also accompany an installation of vintage frames with monochrome photographs made in Corsica and a case containing sand, exhibited at the latest edition of the PhotoLux Festival in Lucca.
Through her heterogeneous artistic production, Ilaria Abbiento explores new itineraries to navigate the islands of her inner archipelago and the sea thus takes on a strong personal and symbolic value that pays homage to the cycle of life. You play with images that confuse sky and sea and with the elements of nature, as in the video MAROSI 48KN 90Km / h – designed for the Pecci Museum in Prato and projected at the PAC Museum in Milan.
Ilaria Abbiento traces new routes for us, on the coordinates of her poetry and her art, capable of remaining in apnea, to pass even the storm that sometimes overwhelms us, at any angle and, too many times, unexpectedly.
