MIA Photo Fair: The New Dutch Renaissance

Bastiaan Woudt & Paul Cupido

On the occasion of MIA Photo Fair, MC2gallery is proud to present, for the first time in a major joint exhibition project, two of the most significant names in the contemporary Dutch photographic scene: Bastiaan Woudt and Paul Cupido.

This booth is not merely a presentation of works, but a deep reflection on the vitality of the Dutch school of photography, which today stands out worldwide for its ability to transform reality into an hyper-intellectual and sensory visual experience.

The Common Thread: Beyond the Lens

The bond connecting Woudt and Cupido lies in a common, visceral search for “essential beauty.” Although their languages are distinct, both share the heritage of the great Dutch masters, where light is not an accessory, but the true architect of the composition.

  • Bastiaan Woudt acts as a sculptor of light. His work, characterized by extreme tonal contrast and almost tactile sharpness, elevates the subject—whether a portrait or an abstract detail—to a metaphysical dimension. Woudt challenges the boundaries of classical photography, pushing post-production toward a graphic synthesis that turns the image into an object of pure design.

  • Paul Cupido is the poet of the ephemeral. His work explores the intimate bond between man and nature, celebrating the fragility of the life cycle. Through a contemplative sensitivity, Cupido does not just capture a moment, but evokes its spirit, using photography as a meditative medium that dialogues with the earth and its transformations.

Together, these two artists represent the most authentic and innovative face of contemporary Dutch photography: a school that has successfully moved beyond mere documentation to embrace abstraction, material research, and a profound reflection on the human condition.

MC2gallery invites the public to explore this unique dialogue, where Woudt’s formal rigor finds its natural complement in Cupido’s organic, profound vision, offering an exclusive overview of one of the most compelling directions in contemporary European art.
