Paolo Ciregia (born in Viareggio in 1987, lives and works in Italy) is a visual artist whose practice spans photography, installation, sculpture, and performance. His work is rooted in a direct engagement with reality, developed through experiences in contexts marked by strong political and social tension.
Between 2014 and 2015, Ciregia spent time in Ukraine, documenting the consequences of the conflict firsthand. This experience became a formative moment in his practice: the images and materials gathered on site are not treated as straightforward reportage, but rather as the starting point for a broader reflection on violence, propaganda, ideological power, and the fragility of historical memory.
Working with photographs, found objects, and archival materials, the artist physically intervenes in his works through processes of manipulation, incision, and transformation, destabilizing the documentary value of the image and revealing its symbolic and political dimension. His practice thus operates in a space between testimony and abstraction, between image and matter.
Ciregia’s work invites viewers to question mechanisms of control and the narratives that shape contemporary reality, opening up a critical space in which the artwork becomes a tool of resistance and awareness.
