Confine – Vittoria Gerardi solo show

Presented Artist:

Vittoria Gerardi

mc2gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Italy of the young artist Vittoria Gerardi.

Vittoria Gerardi was born in Padua in 1996. She began to familiarize herself with photography at the age of sixteen. After high school she moved to New York where she attended the International Center of Photography and worked as an assistant to the Italian photographer Renato D’ Agostin. In 2016 the first series of hers was published in the volume Confine, a collection of prints made in Death Valley. She visited Death Valley in August 2015 during a coast to coast motorcycle trip across the United States. This is her first work with a Leica M6 and she developed it in the darkroom with a very mature conceptual vision of the landscape and a high quality printing technique. Death Valley, to the east in the Californian desert is the lowest, driest and hottest area in North America. It is 139 miles long and mountain massifs alternate with extensions of land covered with salt, an alien scenario, where no human being could live. In the “Confine” series, Vittoria Gerardi presents her perception of the landscape, a physical, visual and mental experience through the Death Valley. The blinding light and therefore the inability to see is rendered by the artist by selecting parts of the negative, extracting fragments of the landscape to make them become symbolic lines, almost scars of light and time, poised between inconsistency and matter. The same scars that the Death Valley landscape leaves in the memory of those who cross it.
